I think its getting to be about that time again. We have a lot of new faneditors, and hopefully we'll get some cool cover arts from them too. So, lets chat about previous contests, what worked well? what didn't work so well? what ideas do you have for new contests? lets get those ideas flowing!!!

I suggest creating cover arts for monthly fanedit winners that have only one cover.
These are all popular and it's cool to have a variety of options for these great works of art.

did anyone think that they don't have to be the same title?

like what about just doing covers for edits that don't have a cover at all?

That was in fact what we were doing until recently. Then we sort of ran out of edits to cover.

well, i think what joe means is that the contestants could pick ANY naked edit to create a cover for. It doesnt have to be a specific one or two chosen by me. and its not a bad idea, I'll give it some thought.

And we sort of gave up on the "naked edits." Sadly the only ones that were left, were rather uninteresting (sorry faneditors who made those) to most people, and its hard enough getting participation in the contests.

So we need things that would be fun to make covers for, and get interest and participation. keep those ideas coming!!

Just a thought, but why not try organizing with a fan editor in advance to do a cover. For eg if one of the members was just about to release a new fan edit, organize it so that instead of them organizing a cover themselves the contest can do it for them. There always seems to be new edits coming out, surely some of the editors wouldn't mind taking a little bit of risk and adventure and putting their covers fate in the contest.

it sure is a fun idea. and we did that with CBB's Pan's Labyrinth edit. I would be up for it again!

I like the idea of creating cover art for winning FE-of-the-months and new edits.
Making covers for naked edits made the most sense but if there arent any left then I guess thats out the door.
Each person choosing a random cover sounds more fun but I think it would skew the voting process. if someone chooses a less popular title to make cover art for (Running Scared ;) ) they may not get a fair shake simple because voters might not like the title compared to something more popular (T2).

rather than have a few titles with dozens of covers... i would imagine that having an alternate cover for all of the edits to be more interesting.

just saying.

I'm just waiting for the next competition to start. I'm ready to do some designing. Hopefully, this time, I'll actually get around to it. :)

Ive actually done some work on a cover for Batman Begins Dark Cut which was going good, playing with photoshop plugins and learning new blending effects.

It was coming along real nicely but some personal matters came up along with the usual work stuff and havent done the finishing touches yet.

well, I had planned to run a contest in October. I will still try to get something together in the next couple days, but we may need to rethink things. We have had near zero participation in cover arts, and little for contest ideas.

I don't mind having the contests for boon, avp, throw and elbarto.... but putting a lot of effort into them for that takes the fun out a bit. Like I said earlier, I am wide open to ideas...

plans will come when people start creating more covers.
Currently cover art creations have almost stopped and we will not hold a contest with this premises.
So, Dr. Strange, create some covers for fanedits and some others, do the same and we can have a cool contest.

thank you boon. I couldn't have said it better myself. Currently there is ZERO participation in cover art creation (aside from editors creating covers for their own edits, which isn't even 100%). When we stated the contests, there were a few artists in the forum, and they were creating cover arts often, so it seemed like a fun event.

But now its just work. I'm sorry, but the contests just seem like a waste of time when only the same 3 or 4 people participate. Nobody likes throwing a party for themselves, when they are the only guests...

Dr. Stranger, welcome to the forums. This is a great place, and we are sadly missing cover artists. I encourage you to start contributing covers. We need them. I will bring the contest back soon when the cover art spark is back.

In the meantime, stay tuned for a different contest. joebshmoe suggested a merch design contest, and that is likely to happen very soon.

Hey, if the contests aren't gonna happen anymore (and I'm very sad to see them go as they were one of the few things that gave me an excuse to have a play with Photoshop these days) could we at least set up a thread (updated fortnightly or something) with a list of released/about to be released fan edits that need covers. The requests thread is a mess and it's hard to tell whether a request has been filled or even which edit is actually having a cover requested for it. Also many faneditiors don't seem to bother with the request thread.

I know you guys often suggest that we help design covers outside the contest but finding the fanedits that need a cover, don't already have an artist lined up and appeals to my own personal love of movies (I definitely prefer making covers for fanedits where I've seen and at least somewhat enjoyed the original movie) can be and is a very daunting task. A simple single post with a list of the movies and links to their forum pages would be a great help and make finding projects to do a lot easier in my opinion.

The requests thread is not a mess. It's faneditors asking for cover art and usually not much happens then. Still it is THE appropriate thread for it. There are fanedits with no cover art, there are fanedits that could do with better cover art. And it is impossible to tell what people like and what they don't (except if they post about it). My suggestion: pick whatever you want. It really does not matter at all, if the release already has cover art. It's not much work to scroll through the true fanedits or extended edition section on fanedit.org and find out what needs cover art. The screenshot can also be a huge help in finding if you think an improved cover art could do. I think it is all there and we cannot pick the ones for you which you want to create.

not really. It's a free choice to do whatever you want to do. Does it matter if someone else is creating a cover art at the same time? Do we have a limit of allowed cover arts? No.
Now we do have a few rules about the screenshot:
the faneditor gets the screenshot with his own cover art, except if he says otherwise or if a contest is held (then the winner gets the screenshot).

As simple as it is: if you enjoy a fanedit or the fanedit idea and want to contribute: do it.
